Marley and Me Book Review

“Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, and they spend most of it waiting for us to come home each day. It is amazing how much love and laughter they bring into our lives and even how much closer we become with each other because of them.”

If you read this book, prior warning, you may need to prepare yourself for and emotional ride and have a box of tissues handy!

Marley and Me, written by John Grogan is a memoir of sorts. This is the story of a loveable, misbehaving golden Labrador retriever and his two owners John and Jenny Grogan.

The story starts with John and Jenny wanting something more in their lives but not being ready for children they decide on getting a dog. They visit a breeder and instantly fall in love with a bouncing, bounding ball of yellow fur. Reading this, you may feel that John and Jenny are not the best dog owners in the world and you may be right but this does not stop you from falling in love with them and their story.

This is beautifully written and John does a great job of detailing what their life with Marley was like, and all the emotions they felt.

This memoir really emphasises the difference that a four-legged friend can make to your life, how big a part they play in your life and how much of a companion they can be.

Heart-breaking, heart-warming and hilarious all in one.

“Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, and they spend most of it waiting for us to come home each day.”
